As I reflect on this feedback given by Meriam, it has given me much motivation to continue my role as a Construction Project Manager. The project that she mentioned is one of the construction projects that I've handled, which is exceptionally challenging not only in terms of the technical requirements that have to be complied with and constraints in executing it but also with the difficulties of the stakeholders involved in the project, such as the client and the design consultants. This, together with the unexpected circumstances of the global pandemic, has had a significant impact on the project, making it difficult to complete.
It would be unnatural to say that I am not affected by all the challenges and struggles that we have been encountering, but as a leader, it came to my mind that if I show my team that I am also being demoralized by the situation, the project will not move forward at all and will abruptly be terminated.
Instead, I have shown them a positive attitude that every problem can be resolved one way or another. In these circumstances, I have immediately shifted my management style to suit the current situation and tackle each encountered issue with unconventional or alternative solutions that are sensible, practical, effective, and yet still follow the construction standards. However, this would not be possible without the cooperation of my high-performing team, who are all professionals and ready for any kind of challenge.
With this, and to be able to respond quickly to all the issues, I have implemented a regular meeting to discuss all issues encountered and explore all possible solutions, allowing different perspectives from the team. This has proven to be very effective, as every member of the team is engaged and aligned with the actions that need to be taken.
Experiencing all these challenges has strengthened me and the team, making it easier for us to handle different complex projects after completing that project. Despite being agile, I still need to improve my strategic leadership and communication skills to effectively navigate various challenges in construction and management, which are constantly evolving in this rapidly changing work and business environment.
